Maria’s Journey of overcoming mental health issues and securing employment as a waitress

At just 23 years old, Maria faced significant challenges with her mental health and struggled to secure long-term employment since leaving school. She had frequent setbacks by being admitted to hospital and she needed support and guidance to build a pathway toward stability and meaningful work. 

Through referral to uLaunch by Centrelink, Maria met with Employment Consultant’s Leanne and David at the Mirrabooka office. It was apparent to the team that Maria had little confidence and held back in their initial conversations. However, through a patient and empathetic approach, she began to open up, sharing details about her mental health struggles.  

Maria receives professional support for her mental health and the team worked in alignment with her support plan to help her think of a career that matched her interests and capabilities. During their discussions, Maria revealed her prior experience in hospitality and expressed a willingness to explore this field further. The team then worked closely with Maria to set career goals while working on interview skills and updating her resume. 

Now a trusted relationship had been built, Maria grew confidence in her abilities to work. When the team presented an opportunity for a waitress position at Varsity Bar, Maria was determined to succeed. With support from uLaunch, including interview attire and transport assistance, Maria felt prepared and ready to take on the challenge.  

Maria had a successful interview, and she got the role. With fortnightly check ins from David and Leanne, Maria is going above and beyond in her role as a waitress and even taking on more responsibilities, including working in the bar. Her supportive team environment and personal drive have resulted in Maria recently achieving 26 weeks of employment. 

This accomplishment is just one of Maria’s recent milestones. Since starting her job and receiving ongoing support from uLaunch, Maria has maintained her mental health and has avoided being admitted to hospital for over six months. 

Maria is on the path to long-term, sustainable employment with a bright future. Her story reflects the importance of employment services co-existing with professional health teams to ensure participants have the tools and resources to thrive, be it in daily life or employment.
