Luke Benson, a 25-year-old from Moana in Adelaide, lives with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and social anxiety. Despite facing difficulties with self-confidence and social skills, which made job searching particularly challenging, Luke was determined to overcome these obstacles. His goal was to achieve independence and secure meaningful employment.
Through referral to uLaunch from Ethical Support Services, Luke connected with uLaunch NDIS Consultant Melissa and started his NDIS journey with the Salisbury team.
From their first meeting, Luke and Melissa quickly built a strong connection. Luke had a positive attitude and was hopeful about overcoming the barriers he faced. He needed tailored support to guide him on his journey.
Using the Discovery Model, a training model devised by the Centre for Disability Employment Research (CDERP), Melissa worked with Luke to identify his career goals and aspirations. Together, they updated Luke’s resume and practiced interviewing skills to boost his confidence. To further support Luke on his journey, Melissa helped him prepare for work and assisted in obtaining his WWCC, RRHAN Certificate, NPC and HC learner license.
Luke made great progress during his sessions, and with Melissa’s support, he was ready to take the next step toward employment. Melissa found an opportunity for Luke to gain work experience at a local garden centre, where he developed new skills in garden maintenance. This hands-on experience not only deepened his appreciation for nature but also provided valuable skills that will benefit him in future endeavors.
Reflecting on his work experience, Luke says:
“I have gained so many achievements and confidence and uLaunch are helping me towards reaching my goals.”
As Luke continues to work with Melissa, his journey with uLaunch NDIS has helped him gain confidence and independence, putting him on the path to employment. With customised training and real work experience, Luke is overcoming challenges and is now close to achieving his goal of meaningful employment. His story highlights the power of collaboration and community partnerships in helping individuals living with disability find success in the workforce.
