uLaunch NDIS supports help Patrick secure a traineeship in horticulture

uLaunch participant Patrick

For Patrick, living with schizophrenia and an intellectual disability meant facing significant barriers on his journey to independence and securing employment. At 24 years of age, Patrick had a desire to work and be more independent, but he had never held a job since leaving school.

As uLaunch is a specialist provider in transition to work for school leavers, Patrick’s support coordinator referred him to the Rothwell NDIS team where he connected with NDIS Team Leader Nicole.

Patrick’s journey with uLaunch NDIS

To accommodate Patrick’s needs, Nicole first met with both Patrick and his support coordinator at his home, and they quickly built a connection. Nicole recognised that Patrick was eager to change his life and secure a job, but he needed guidance and support to achieve his goals.

Using the discovery model, Nicole identified Patrick’s strengths and interests. Together, they created a resume and cover letter, focusing on building a clear pathway toward employment. Nicole also ensured that Patrick was ready for work and assisted him in obtaining his tax file number.

Travel training also played a key role in helping Patrick engage with his community and overcome challenges. Nicole assisted Patrick in planning efficient routes in the area, which gave him insight into how he could reach his workplace, build his travel confidence and reduce anxiety.

With each session, Patrick grew confidence in his ability to find employment and was excited to start work and contribute to his community. He had a keen interest in working outdoors, however he didn’t have a driver’s licence, which could limit his job options.

To address this issue, Nicole helped Patrick join the PCYC QLD, where he could work on obtaining his license. With their support, Patrick completed his 100 hours driving experience, and with additional support from his family, successfully got his licence. This achievement brought a new sense of pride for Patrick, opening new opportunities for him.

Gaining experience through a traineeship to shape Patrick’s future

With Patrick now having the independence of his own transportation, Nicole identified a perfect opportunity for Patrick that aligned with his aspirations: a traineeship in horticulture. This outdoor role closely matched Patrick’s interests and he secured the trainee position.

Throughout the traineeship, Patrick is gaining valuable on-the-job experience. As well as this, Patrick is actively working towards completing his Certificate II in Horticulture. The confidence and skills he is developing are helping to create a brighter future for his employment and setting him up for long-term success.

As Nicole continues to work closely with Patrick on his journey, he gains not only the tools for independence but also the resilience to face whatever challenges that may lie ahead.
