uLaunch is proud to recognise VenuesWest as the winner of this quarter’s Employer Award. This award celebrates the organisation’s outstanding commitment to inclusive employment practices and its dedication to fostering a diverse, supportive, and welcoming workplace.

The Beginning of a Strong Partnership

The partnership between VenuesWest and uLaunch began in January 2024 when Gaynor O’Hare, an Employment Consultant at uLaunch, noticed several job vacancies posted by VenuesWest. Gaynor quickly reached out to Steven Osborn, Senior People and Culture Consultant at VenuesWest to request an informal conversation about their hiring needs. Steven was receptive to the idea and expressed an interest in exploring inclusive hiring options. What began as a simple discussion soon blossomed into a meaningful collaboration.

A Partnership Built on Understanding

Over time, Gaynor worked closely with VenuesWest’s People & Culture team to gain a deep understanding of their operational needs. This allowed her to refer job-ready candidates who were a perfect fit for the organisation. The partnership streamlined the hiring process, reducing the need for lengthy recruitment procedures and advertising.

As part of their ongoing commitment to inclusive employment, VenuesWest has hired four uLaunch participants. To ensure the success of these hires, the company has implemented a range of supportive measures, including offering flexible hours for medical appointments and adjusting work locations to accommodate long commutes.

Creating a Welcoming Environment

Through their unwavering support, VenuesWest has created a welcoming environment for employees with disabilities,” said Employment Consultant Gaynor O’Hare.

VenuesWest’s inclusive approach has shown the immeasurable benefits of fostering diversity in the workplace. The organisation’s commitment to hiring a diverse range of employees has not only enhanced team dynamics but also driven innovation and created a positive, supportive culture for all.

VenuesWest: Supporting High Performance Sport and the Community

Based in Western Australia, VenuesWest plays a key role in supporting high performance sport by providing world class training and competition facilities, offering direct subsidies to sports for venue and event costs, and ensuring accessible sport experiences for the community.

VenuesWest’s efforts extend far beyond their own workforce. The organisation supports high performance athletes, including para-athletes, by providing state-of-the-art training and competition facilities as they prepare for global events. Additionally, VenuesWest welcomes hundreds of thousands of patrons with disabilities each year, which makes their commitment to inclusive employment practices even more vital.

Overcoming Initial Concerns

Stepping into something new as an organisation, there was understandably some apprehension around the perceived additional support and training that might be required when hiring someone with a disability,” Steven explained. “These concerns were quickly alleviated through the support provided by uLaunch and, more importantly, through the success of the candidates placed at VenuesWest. Their achievements have highlighted the value of fostering an inclusive workplace and have provided a powerful learning moment, breaking down misconceptions about hiring individuals with disabilities.

Changing Perspectives Across the Organisation

Steven shared that the experience has had a profound impact on the organisation, especially in shifting the perspectives of managers. “Managers who have worked with these recruits are now far more open to considering candidates with disabilities for future vacancies. This partnership has been a valuable learning experience, helping to broaden our perspectives and reinforcing the importance of inclusion within our workplace culture.”

We are proud to be recognised with this award,” Steven added. “It’s a testament to the incredible support we’ve received from uLaunch. This partnership has not only benefited our workforce but has also helped us better serve the community we support.

A Message to Other Employers

When asked what advice VenuesWest would offer to other employers who may be hesitant about hiring people with disabilities, Steven shared:

By taking the chance and giving someone an opportunity, you’ll not only help improve their life, but your workplace will be strengthened in several ways. Employees with disabilities bring unique perspectives, resilience, and a strong work ethic that can enhance team dynamics and drive innovation. Their success stories inspire others and foster a more inclusive and supportive culture. Additionally, you’ll gain access to a broader talent pool and strengthen your organisation’s reputation as an employer that values diversity and inclusion. Taking that first step might feel unfamiliar, but the benefits are immeasurable.”
