Discovering Passion Amidst Struggles
Chevy has Autism and his struggles began when the traditional education system failed to provide the necessary support, leading to a disengagement that took a toll on his mental health. However, amidst the challenges, a beacon of hope emerged when he discovered Mixed Martial Arts (MMA). This newfound passion not only connected him to something greater but also became a crucial tool for managing his anxieties and improving his overall well-being.
Navigating the Path to Employment
Seeking meaningful employment, Chevy turned to uLaunch and NDIS Consultant Leilani. Together, they embarked on a journey to make Chevy job-ready, with a focus on his love for construction and landscaping. A community mapping exercise revealed a promising opportunity with a local landscaping company, setting the stage for a remarkable turning point.
Triumph Over Challenges
One of the hurdles encountered was Chevy’s age, a factor that typically results in a lower hourly wage rate. However, the unwavering dedication and innovative thinking of uLaunch area manager Leigh Levonpera defied expectations. Chevy secured a full adult wage, a triumph that left everyone involved overjoyed.
To ensure Chevy’s success in his landscaping role, uLaunch incorporated mock interviews, industry targeting, and a strong emphasis on workplace safety and behaviour. The culmination of these efforts was an interview with RBP Group, a local landscaping company. Stepping into the interview with confidence, Chevy not only secured the job but also earned the admiration of his entire family.
Today, Chevy works full-time as a Landscaping Offsider with RBP Group in Springfield Lakes. The company has expressed interest in initiating him into an apprenticeship, providing not just employment but a pathway for future growth.
Chevy’s journey is a great example of the transformative power of personalised support and determination. In the face of challenges, he emerged stronger, proving that with the right guidance, struggles can be turned into triumphs.
