Brett Burling’s Journey from Barriers to Employment

At 22 years old, Brett Burling faced barriers to employment due to an intellectual disability and limited work experience. He was feeling discouraged and disheartened, struggling to find his way in life. Now, Brett stands taller with his shoulders back from the confidence instilled in him from the quality service of uLaunch employment consultant, Sarah Powell.

With the help of his support worker, Ryan, Brett connected with Sarah at uLaunch Toukley on the Central Coast. In collaboration, they worked on building Brett’s employability skills, identified his strengths, and explored areas of interest. To ensure future success and job retention, Sarah worked on upskilling and enrolled Brett on to a 13-week Certificate III in Supply Chain Operations course. Brett excelled and completed the course and with Sarah’s assistance, obtained additional certifications in First Aid, a White Card, and a Forklift Licence. It is with these newfound skills and tools that will aid Brett to sustainable employment.

However, the road to employment was not without its challenges. Brett’s motivation would occasionally lapse, leading to missing critical appointments with Sarah. Sarah reminded him of his goals and aspirations and encouraged him to consider the importance of independence and self-reliance. She empowered Brett and it was a pivotal moment for him to take charge of his life.

It was not long after Sarah’s intervention that she brokered an interview for Brett at Hats Off Kitchens, a family run business within Brett’s local area. Sarah accompanied Brett to the initial interview where he then underwent three trials, each highlighting his unwavering commitment and enthusiasm for the role. Jim, owner of Hats Off Kitchens, was extremely impressed and offered Brett the role of Delivery Offsider and Warehouse Assistant.

Brett is thriving in his new role and is an integral part of the team where his contributions are valued and celebrated. Brett is working 2 days per week and each day is gaining practical skills and becoming more confident in his responsibilities. With regular check-ins from Sarah, Brett is tracking 13 weeks of employment, and he has a new sense of pride and purpose. Brett now stands taller with his shoulders back and loves being able to “Shout Dinner” to treat his mum. He has paved the new way of life for the Burling family with his two younger brothers inspired to work just like their big brother!

As Brett looks ahead on his path to success, his journey is a reminder that no obstacle is too big to overcome with the right support and positive attitude. Early interventions were key in his journey as Sarah went above and beyond to ensure every opportunity for Brett to progress, grow and develop.
